#1944- Silvia
Silvia was a sweet ewe. One of my favorites & I’m so please to know she will continue to provide love & kindness to someone special.
A heritage breed sheepskin of this size is a rare find. Tunis are known for the beautiful thick coats of cream (not white) wool.
Approximate Hide Dimensions:
Length Vertically: 5”1 X Width: 25-31”
Wool Length: 3.5” (uncombed)
3 very small holes on shoulder area, (not visible on wool side)
*This hide does contain small amounts of VM/Vegetation (see additional notes below).
This is a impressively large sheep hide, for any breed, but even rarer in a medium size breed like the American Tunis. This hide maintains the best qualities of lamb leather with it’s supple flexibility & soft suede finish.
The most unique feature of this particular hide is it’s unheard of wool length & loft. As is, Clementines fleece stands at just under 4 inches. If combed out it would easily be at least another inch! Tunis wool, of this length, is highly sought after for it’s resulting, premium yarn.
Our tanner does thousands of hides a year, and made note when we picked them up, that our Tunis hide’s wool was by far the densest & “puffiest” they’d ever worked with.
This one of a kind, heritage breed sheepskin is a rare find at its large size, impressive fleece length & such minimal leather perfections.
TERMINOLOGY & NOTES ABOUT OUR SHEEPHIDES:
LAMBS WOOL: The first growth of wool on a sheep. It is any Sheep’s softest wool & therefore the most premium wool available. “Lamb’s wool” is a common term used in garment & yarn descriptions to emphasize it’s softness & scarcity.
LAMB LEATHER: Yearling leather is an amazing combo of durable, yet impressively thin & supple. These characteristics all it to be used effective in a diverse number of settings wether draped over a couch, a chair, floor, bed, etc. this soft, white suede it up for the task.
VM/ VEGETATION IN THE WOOL: These hides originate from a genuine grass fed sheep farm here in Wisconsin. They are from well loved, working sheep. You will find small amounts of tiny pieces vegetation (particles of hay, etc ) down low in the wool. This is common amongst sheep that are pasture focused vs. those blanketed for wool. This vegetation does not deter from the hides soft, cushiony function nor it’s gorgeous appearance. It’s only apparent if you search for it & is easily removable.
